Texas-born singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell has a music career that spans almost 40 years, starting in the early 1970s when he moved to Nashville. His talent earned him a spot in Emmylou Harris’ Hot Band, and in 1977 he formed his own group, The Cherry Bombs. Crowell’s 1988 release Diamonds and Dirt generated five number-one singles, including “It’s Such A Small World” with Rosanne Cash. Other hits written for other artists include “Shame on the Moon” for Bob Seger and “Voila! An American Dream” for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. His work has earned numerous awards, including a Grammy in 1989 for Best Country Song (“After all This Time”) and an induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. Crowell’s 13th studio album and most recent release is 2008’s Sex and Gasoline. His memoir, Chinaberry Sidewalks, was published this year. In this Master Session, Crowell will draw from nearly four decades of experience to share his approach to songwriting.
