Being a composer is one thing. Creating a viable, income-producing career as a composer is quite another. This two-part workshop will address a range of important information vital to your career. Part 1 will cover the many paths to a composer’s income; understanding your biggest asset; the six rights of copyright; how ASCAP works; technical and business details about publishing, self-publishing, distribution and recording and more. Part 2 will be presented Thursday, April 28th at 1pm in Silver Lake.

Composer - Sea Portraits, Opera: The Postman Always Rings Twice   Composer Stephen Paulus has written over 400 works including more than thirty works for orchestra, eight operas, dozens of choral works as well as works for solo voice and chamber ensembles. He received his Ph.D. in Music Theory and Composition from the University of Minnesota in 1978, and since that time has held prestigious Composer in Residence posts with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Tucson Symphony, Annapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Dale Warland Singers. In 1983, Paulus's opera The Postman Always Rings Twice became the first American opera to be produced at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland. Paulus has received both Guggenheim and NEA Composer Fellowships. Orchestras that have premiered or performed Paulus works include the Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, and many other regional orchestras. Paulus was commissioned to write a three-act opera, Heloise and Abelard, for the Juilliard Opera Center and a work for chorus and orchestra for the Westminster Choir College and New York Philharmonic. In 2008 he founded the ground-breaking ASCAP Composer Workshops to present career-enhancing seminars throughout the U.S. Performances in January and February of 2011 including his Double Trumpet Concerto with BMOP and four performances of his opera, The Postman Always Rings Twice at Boston University.
